Exide speaks about nonattainment boundary
On Sept. 1, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) responded to a letter written by City Manager George Purefoy regarding the recent news reports about air quality around the Exide Technologies battery recycling plant in Frisco. For the first time, an Exide representative from the Frisco plant has publicly commented to the media about the nonattainment area.

Council undecided on where to cut spending
At Tuesdays regular meeting, the Frisco City Council was in agreement to maintain the current property tax rate at 46.5 cents per $100 of assessed value; however, they disagreed with how to balance an expected gap of $1.6 million in the budget. After discussing their options at length, the council voted 4 2 to take the entire amount from the debt service reserve fund for now, knowing that cuts can be made at a later time in other areas of the budget.

Cheerleading debate focuses on classifications of activity
In the September/October issue of American Cheerleader magazine, 25-year-old actress Ashley Tisdale told readers to anyone who thinks cheerleading isnt a sport, I can definitely tell you that it is. Tisdale plays a cheerleader on the CW show Hellcats, which premieres tonight, but her declaration on the spirited sideliners contradicts a recent federal decision.

Snow Cone Lady says goodbye to summer
In Frisco, you can almost tell the season by when the Snow Cone Ladys small stand has its window open for business. After today, the stand takes its annual hiatus, taking with it the sure signs of summer. Although bad economic times permeate the news, the Snow Cone Lady herself, Mary Mathis, said every year her shop does a little better.

New changes apply to Frisco ISD medication policy
Parents should be aware of a change to the Frisco ISD medication policy that begins this school year. The new policy will no longer allow the district to maintain a supply of oral nonprescription medication incase a parent forgets to provide it.

Smithsonian awards Frisco Museum rare Santa Fe train
In the next couple months, a rare diesel locomotive from the Smithsonian Institute will become a permanent piece in the Museum of the American Railroad collection. The acquisition of this prized model PA-1 locomotive will help with the museums plans to expand and relocate to Frisco.

Sister Cities International gains momentum
Just about everything the city of Frisco does has an international component in it, whether it be in business, the sports arena or in class rooms. To enrich economic, athletic, educational and cultural opportunities, Frisco will eventually partner with at least four sister cities across four continents as part of the Frisco Texas Sister Cities International (SCI) project.

As parents drop off students in front of the latest school buildings, the block letters above the doors speak to a tradition in Frisco of dedicated educators and those with a profound love for children. Five of the six new schools in Frisco ISD that opened this week are named after admirable people from the community, and even Lone Star High School found its name in deep Texas roots.

Convocation aims to light a fire
Blocks of organized color in every shade filled the stadium seats at Dr Pepper Arena Thursday morning for the district-wide convocation. Teachers and staff sat together by school, pumped up through singing and cheering for this years achievements and the hope of continued success.
